I'm a developer, and I lead a team of two developers and two testers at Propel Finance, an asset finance lender. Most of my time still goes on writing code. The rest goes on keeping our sprints on track and breaking work down into pieces the team can pick up.

I'm based in Cardiff and work remotely, mostly with Laravel, Vue, Docker and Nginx.

Things I've fixed at work

Most of the work I'm proudest of started as something slow or fiddly that people had learnt to live with.

  1. Copying decision rules between environments

Recreating a production issue meant adding rules by hand, which took 10 to 30 minutes for each rule set. I built a tool that exports and imports a full set in seconds, and tells you which rules couldn't be copied and why.

  2. A slow page for our underwriters

The page showing how much money we have tied up with a customer took 10 to 15 seconds to load. I rebuilt it in Vue with background loading and a five-minute Redis cache, and it now loads in 2 to 5.

  3. Replacing our e-signing provider

Our provider was being switched off with four sprints' notice. I planned the replacement and kept the team to our architect's design, and we finished with a sprint to spare.

  4. Feature flags missed in production

Turning a feature on depends on its flags being set up in every environment. I wrote a Claude Code skill that lists each flag added in a sprint and where it's set, so a missing one shows up before release.

Career

I worked in retail and IT support while I studied, and started in software in 2018. I spent three years as a platform engineer at Sonovate working with Azure and Kubernetes, then went back to Propel as lead developer in 2025, so I've worked on the code and on what it runs on.

Things I build for fun

  • TableSwing

Live football league tables shown as a dumbbell chart, so you can see who could overtake who in the next gameweek.

  • GameHub

A gaming-focused new tab page for Chrome and Firefox. Plain JavaScript with no build step.

  • Odyssey

My own process for building apps with AI, from idea to spec to architecture to code, with notes kept in Obsidian and a few custom Claude Code skills. I've used it to take a React Native app from an idea to a working backend.

The code for these is private for now, but I'm happy to walk through any of it.
